Overall, Trevor Murray is a really nice guy but there are definitely much better options out there as far as insurance is concerned.
American National's cashback program is also an absolute joke. My windshield got a rock chip in it while I was out of town. I went to get the chip repaired and figured the insurance would cover the cost (since I had maximum coverage) and was informed that they would indeed pay for the chip repair but it would count as a claim and would negate my cashback bonus. I ended up paying for the rock chip so I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of dealing with the claim. However, a month later my renter's insurance lapsed without me knowing so I lost the cashback bonus anyways (I take full responsibility for this but I would have loved to have received a phone call or reminder informing me my policy was about to expire).
I have been with American National Insurance for quite a few years. The price was fairly competitive with the other insurance companies but I was not terribly satisfied with the customer service. It is extremely difficult to get in touch with anyone in the office (I would typically call and leave a message then my call would be returned a few days later). On several occasions I also received an invoice stating that I owed them additional money after I had already paid my 6 months of premiums in full. I was never certain why I was being charged more than I was expecting and they never went out of their way to tell me the reasoning until I called the office to ask about it.
